Solar Electricity
Alva Northern - Solar Energy, Photovoltaic Electricity

An average home solar Photovoltaic (PV) system can generate around 40% of the energy your home requires annually. (source: Energy Saving Trust) As photovoltaic systems work and generate no CO2, you will be helping the environment.   The average domestic solar PV system could save over 30 tonnes of CO2 during its lifetime - per house!  We can supply PV systems and install them to order. Call for details!

Alva Northern can advise you about government grants for renewable energy sources such as solar panels, photovoltaics and solar-energy. Save energy and money by using renewable energy sources.

Photovoltaic cells are fixed to the roof or wall(s). The PV cells are made from layers of a semiconducting material. As light falls onto the cell it generates an electric charge. The stronger the sunshine, the more electricity is produced. The output of a PV cell is measured in kilowatt peak (kWp) - that's the amount of energy the cell generates in full, direct, sunlight.

The table below outlines the new Feed-In Tariffs. Depending on how much electricity you generate, you will be paid a tax-free, index-linked tariff for every KwH you use and a slightly higher rate ( plus 0.03 pence/KwH) for the excess that you feed to the Grid. Other incentives are also available, call us for more information.

Solar Energy - Electricity Benefits - Photovoltaics

* Generate your own electricity
* Cut your electricity bills by 40% with a 2 kWp system
* Store excess electricity in batteries for later
* Sell electricity back to the Grid
* Save 30 tons of CO2 over system lifetime
* Reduce carbon footprint by 1.2 tons per year
* Use in conjunction with other renewable systems
* Photovalics qualify for Feed-In Tariffs
* Low maintenance - just wipe the panels clean from time to time

Energy Source Output Range Tariff (per KwH) (note: 'a') Tariff Duration
Solar PV <4KW New (c) 36.1 25
Solar PV <4KW Retrofit (c) 41.3 25
Solar PV >4 - 10KW 36.1 25
Solar PV >10 - 100KW 31.4 25
Solar PV >100KW - 5MW 29.3 25
Solar PV Standalone (c) 29.3 25
Existing Generators Transferred From RO 9.0 Up To 20
(a) Index-linked tariff (c) Definitions: 'Retrofit' means installed on a building which is
occupied. 'New Build' means installed before the (new) building is occupied.
'Stand Alone' means not attached to a building and not wired as to
provide electricity to an occupied building.
Once a system has been successfully registered the tariff levels are guaranteed for
the term of the tariff and index-linked.
Those households who generate electricity primarily for their own consumption
will pay no income tax on the tariff income.
